Housings for airbag initiators, seat belt pretensioners, and pedestrian protection systems

Electrovac is a globally operating and reliable supplier of airbag initiator housings for the international automotive industry. Airbag initiators and seat belt pretensioners are among the most important passive safety products today. Our hermetic housings are also used in the manufacture of actuators for pedestrian protection systems, active headrests and hood locks, as well as adaptive steering columns.

How it works

In the event of a collision, the crash sensors send an electrical impulse to the initiator, which starts the gas generators. The gas generators immediately deliver a large volume of gas into the airbags and simultaneously activate the retractor mechanisms for the seat belt pretensioners.

The hermetic glass-to-metal seals of the Electrovac Group protect the required initiator charge from changes in humidity or other harsh environmental conditions. The contact pins of the feedthroughs are selectively gold-plated to ensure excellent electrical contact.

Key specifications of the hermetic housings:

  • Hermetically sealed 1E-8 mbar l/s
  • Glass compression force up to 5000 N
  • Conductor pull-out force up to 350 N
  • Temperature resistance from -65°C to 230°C

Electrovac is one of the world’s leading suppliers to the international mobility industry. Highly automated production facilities and specialized testing equipment underscore Electrovac’s zero-defect strategy while guaranteeing production volumes of several hundred million quality glass feedthroughs every year. Our products ensure that the initial charge remains encapsulated and dry over a long service life.

Glass feedthroughs for initiators with industrial end applications

In addition to the mobility sector, initiator housings are also used in industrial products.

Special materials and custom-developed manufacturing processes are used for this niche market to provide long-term protection of the ignition wires and ignition agents against moisture, temperature fluctuations, and high pressures.

Product features:

> Lapped glass-to-metal surface to achieve extremely tight flatness and surface roughness requirements
> Pressure resistance up to 3000 bar
> Temperature resistance up to 230°C
> Selective surface treatment (gold plating)

Our hermetically sealed glass feedthroughs are used in the following applications:

> Ejection seats
> Pyrotechnic ignition mechanisms
> Emergency parachute ignition devices
> Cable cutting devices
